Intro to CNS Flashcards
What makes up the central nervous system?
Brain and Spinal cord
What makes up the peripheral nervous system?
somatic and autonomic
What is somatic
Voluntary muscles
What is sympathetic?
Fight or flight, (norepinephrine)
What is parasympathetic ?
Rest and digest, (acetylcholine)
What is the axon hillock?
Where all the different nerve signals are “summed” before being sent out on axons.
What do the dendrites do?
allow communication among various different cell types.
What are nerve terminals?
The ends of the dendrites
What is arborization?
“Becoming tree like”, allows communication with various different cells all at the same time.
What are auto receptors on a neuron?
They are presynaptic, when active it will slow down the release of neurotransmitters.
What are Transporters on a neuron?
Allow resorption of neurotransmitters.
Astrocytes
1) maintains blood brain barrier.
2) Regulates interstitial fluid
3) structural support
4) assists in neuro development
5) Occupy empty space
Most abundant, star shaped
Ependymal cells
1) Lines ventricles of the brain and central canal
2) Produce CSF
Microglial
1) Phagocytize
2) protect CNS
Oligodendrocytes
Myelinates CNS
