Intro to Chemistry Flashcards
What is chemistry?
Study of matter and the changes it undergoes.
Matter
Anything that takes up space.
Pure substance
A material that has definite composition
-Made of atoms
Mixture
A combo of 2+ kinds of matter, in which each component retains its own characteristics
Element
Pure substance
-Cannot be broken down into smaller substances by CHEMICAL means
Compound
Pure substance
-2+ elements chemically combined in fixed proportions
(H2O)
Solution
Homogenous mixture
-Different components are mixed so they appear to be a single substance
Mechanical mixture
Heterogenous mixture
-different components can be directly seen
Physical change
A change, such as change of state, doesn’t alter the composition of matter
Chemical change
Type of change that occurs when elements and/or compounds interact with each other to form different substances with different properties
Five clues of chemical change
- Colour change
- Heat or light given off
- Gas/bubbles produced
- Percipitate is formed
- Change not reversible
Who invented the modern periodic table?
Dimitri Mendeleev
- Noticed a relationship between the physical and chemical properties
- At the time, 58 elements identified
How many elements in the periodic table?
Over 110 (118) 92 naturally occurring
How is the periodic table organized?
By atomic number
-makes use of element symbols that are the same throughout the world
Metals/non metals located where?
Metals -> left-hand side
Non-metals -> right-hand side
Metalloids -> along the staircase
-The “staircase” separates the metals and non-metals
How’s is the periodic table organized? (Rows / columns)
Horizontal rows -> period
-There are 7 periods
Vertical columns -> groups
-Range from 1-18
What are families?
-Some groups are given special names because they form a family of elements with strong relationships Group 1 -> Alkali metals Group 2 -> Alkali earth metals Group 17 -> Halogens Group 18 -> Nobel gases
What is science?
Way of gaining knowledge & understanding about our natural world.
When we ask WHY or HOW, we are dealing with science.
