what is social anthropology?
focuses on humans in societies, strong focus on culture and aspects of humanity that are acquired rather than natural
Eriksen definition of culture
those abilities, notion, and forms of behavior persons have acquired as members of society
E.B. Tylor’s definition of culture
the complex whole which includes knowledge, belief, art, law, morals, custom, and any other capabilities and habits acquired by man as a member of society
enculturation
process through which culture is passed from one generation to the next, begins in infancy
characteristics of culture
learned, shared, symbolic, integrated, dynamic
culture
acquired, cognitive and symbolic aspects of existence
society
the social organization of human life, patterns of interaction, and power relationships; culture in action
