Intro To Anatomy And Physiology: Body Planes, Regions, And Cavities Flashcards
Frontal plane
Dividing the body vertically, the frontal plane creates the interior (front) and posterior (back) portions of the body.
*Also called the coronal plane.
Sagittal plane
The lateral plane, or sagittal plane, divides the body into left and right sides.
Transverse plane
Running across the body and parallel to the ground, the transversal playing creates an upper and lower sections of the body. Also called the cross-section.

Cavity
An empty space within our bodies.
What are the two major cavities?
Dorsal and ventral
The dorsal cavity is seven divided into what two cavities?
Cranial and spinal
The thoracic cavity is a part of which cavity?
Ventral
Pleural cavities
Two pleural cavities, each contain a lung.
*1/3 areas that make up thoracic cavity.
Pericardial cavity
Contains the heart and is medial to the pleural cavities.
*1/3 areas that make up thoracic cavity.
Mediastinum
Contains the esophagus, trachea, thymus, gland, aorta, and inferior vena cavae.
*1/3 areas that make up thoracic gland
Abdominopelvic
Typically divided an abdominal and pelvic cavities.
What organs are inside the abdominal cavity?
The stomach, spleen, liver, gallbladder, pancreas, most of the small intestine and colon
