Define maladaptiveness
interferes w/ well-being
Define deviancy
what is socially acceptable, undesirable behaviors and breaking laws
Define social discomfort
Those around the individual feel a sense of discomfort (staring too long for example)
Define Irrationality & unpredictable
Things that don’t really make sense (I.e. wearing a jacket in 80º weather)
Pros for diagnoses
- Clinicians can better study & comprehend different disorders
- Build a sense of community for those who have the disorder
- May improve treatment methods
- Insurance purposes
Cons for diagnosis
- May lead to a loss of information
- Focus too much on the diagnosis itself and not the actual person
- Labeling, stigma, stereotyping amongst general population & clinicians
- Errors & fuzziness
What is Prevalence?
the number of active cases
What is Point prevalence?
active cases of a disorder in a given population at a given point of time.
Example: You talk to all 200 people in your town on a spring day and find 60 of them have allergy symptoms. The point prevalence of allergies in your town would be 30% or 3 in 10 individuals (60/200)
what is 1-year prevalence?
anyone suffering from a disorder at any point in time throughout the year
What is Lifetime Prevalence?
estimate of the number of people suffering from a disorder any time in their lives
What is mental health epidemiology?
the study of the distribution of mental disorders in a given population
