Intro to A&P Flashcards
What is ANATOMY?
It is the study of body structure
What is PHYSIOLOGY?
It is the study of the function of structures
The proper function of anatomical structures help the body to
maintain a steady-state internal environment.
is the ability of the body to maintain steady-state conditions inside.
HOMEOSTASIS
What is macroscopic anatomy?
The study of structures one can see with a naked eye
What is Microscopic anatomy?
The study of structures one can only see with an assistive device like a microscope
What are the 2 Major subdivisions of anatomy
Macroscopic and Microscopic
What are the main three types of macroscopic or gross anatomy
Systemic anantomy, Regional anantomy and Surface anantomy
the study of structures that work together as an organ system to accomplish a specific function.
Systemic anatomy
study of all of the structures in a particular area (“region”) of the body.
Regional anatomy
the study of visible landmarks on the exterior of the body. These landmarks help one relate to the deeper anatomical structures
Surface anatomy
Microscopic anatomy can also be studied at several levels which are
Cytology and Histology
the study of the structure of individual cells.
Cytology
the study of the structure of tissues.
Histology
there are other anatomical divisions that are sometimes used which are
Developmental anatomy, Pathological anatomy and Radiographic anatomy
the study of how structures change between conception and death.
Developmental anatomy
type of developmental anatomy but specific to the changes that occur between conception and birth.
EMBRYOLOGY
the study of how disease affects structures. This could be at the macroscopic or microscopic level.
Pathological anatomy
the study of microscopic structures using various imaging techniques.
Radiographic anatomy
the smallest units of matter.
ATOMS
when two or more atoms join together via chemical bonds.
MOLECULES
In living organisms, there are four groups of large molecules: carbohydrates, proteins, lipids and nucleic acids.
BIOMOLECULES
the human body is composed from 4 elements. Can you name which four?
Oxygen, Carbon, Hydrogen, and Nitrogen
the smallest living units of an organism
CELLS
are the basic structural and functional units of living beings.
CELLS
form when groups of similar cells work together to perform a specific function.
TISSUES
There are four basic types of tissue in the body
- epithelial tissue
- connective tissue
- muscle tissue
- nervous tissue
form when two or more tissues are working together in a functional way.
ORGANS
groups of organs working together in a functional and purposeful way.
ORGAN SYSTEMS
the living individual that is a composite of the various organ systems all working together to ensure survival
