What are the four ACTS of firearm safety
Assume every firearm is loaded, Control the muzzle direction at all times, Trigger finger must be kept off the trigger and out of the trigger guard, and See that the firearm is unloaded - PROVE it safe
What are the PROVE it Safe Pointers
Point the firearm in the safest available direction, Remove all ammunition, Observe the chamber(s), Verify the feeding path, and Examine the bore for obstructions
What are some of the federal legal responsibilities?
Owners need a valid license, must inform the CFP within 30 days of a change of address, needs a valid PAL to borrow, buy, or inherit firearms
What are some of the provincial legal responsibilities?
Some provinces may require anyone who hunts with non-restricted to wear blaze orange clothing, some restrict shooting across or within a certain distance of roads/dwellings, some limit your use of motorized vehicles while hunting or shooting
What are some of the municipal legal responsibilities?
some may not allow the discharge of a firearm under any circumstances within their boundaries, some will regulate firing times and/or closeness to dwellings
What is the punishment of pointing a loaded/unloaded gun at someone?
Guilty of an indictable offense is imprisonment for no longer than 5 years. Guilty of an offense is a fine of $5000 and/or 6-month imprisonment. They may also lose their firearm. license, and the right to own for a period of time
What is the punishment for not storing, displaying, transporting, or handling the firearms correctly?
Guilty of an indictable offense - 1st offense no more than 2 years in jail. 2nd offense no more than 5 years in jail. Guilty of an offense is a fine of $5000 and/or 6-month imprisonment.
What is a matchlock?
Invented in the 1400’s. Made it possible to aim and fire while holding the firearm with both hands. Issues with it were rain/wind.
What is a wheel locks?
Invented in the 1600’s. The wheel lock worked like a lighter. The spring was wound up with a key. Issues with it was that it was complex and expense to make. Winding was slow and the spring often failed.
What is a percussion cap
Invented in the 1800’s, It was a small metal case (cap) containing material that would explode when struck.
What is a Flintlock?
Invented in the 1600’s. Same as a wheellock. Produced a spark by striking a flint against steel. More reliable but the flint wears out and the spring can fail
What were the four advantages of cartridges?
Easy to load into the breech, the expanding case prevented gas leakage, largely weather proof, and more reliable
What made shells different from the original cartridges?
They have a wad separating the powder from the projectiles
What was the role of firearms in the development of Canada?
Expanded the range and effectiveness of hunting. Often critical for survival
