What are the 6 types of actions
muzzleloader, hinge (or break) action, bolt action, lever action, pump action, semi-auto action
What is a hinge action?
opens near the breech and is usually single or double barreled
What is bolt action?
similar to a door bolt and can be single or multiple shot
What is a lever action?
has a metal handle that opens the action. It can be single or multiple shot
What is a pump action?
works by pumping the fore-end of the stock back and forth and is usually multiple shots
What is a semi-automatic action?
extracts and ejects empty casings and inserts another cartridge in the chamber automatically
What is a slide/tang safety?
Common on shotguns and rifles. Usually on the right side of the receiver on rifles and on the top for shotguns
What is a pivot/lever/rocker safety?
commonly found on modern firearms and old military firearms. Usually location above the trigger area on the left or right side of the bolt
What is a wing safety?
Commonly found on the bolt of a bolt action. Location above the trigger area on the left or right side of the bolt
What is a trigger block/lever safety?
Commonly used on lever action firearms. Ensures the lever-action firearm will not fire unless the lever action is pressed firmly against the stock
What are the 3 positions of a hammer on half-cock notch safety?
fully forward - hammer is resting on the firing pin. May fire.
half-cock - the hammer is part way back and the safety is considered on
full-cock - the hammer is all of the way back and the safety is off
What is cross-bolt safety?
a push button type of safety. Could be marked as safe and fire, on and off, or red meaning that the safety is off
What is an action releases?
Most firearms have some type of mechanism that must be moved to allow an action to be opened or closed.
How do you check the barrel for obstructions?
Looking through the BACK of the barrel. Unload and make sure the chamber is empty before looking down from the muzzle end
What are the steps to loading?
ACTS-PROVE that it is safe, clear/clean for obstructions, point it in a safe direction while loading, make sure nothing touches the trigger, put the safety on, load with the correct ammo, close the action
