Intro Neurology Flashcards
Neuron Function
Conduction of electro-chemical impulses
Neuro-plasticy
Flexibility of neural networks
Grey Matter
Nervous tissue with high concentration of neuro cell bodies
Can not be repaired when damaged
Glial Cells
- support cells
- Influence formation and maintenance of neural networks
- Significant role in learning and memory
White Matter
- primarily composed of myelin
- No neuronal cell bodies
- Makes up tracks and nerves
Central Nervous System
Brain and Spinal Chord
- Higher functioning
- Higher grey matter
- Disease and damage has lower prognosis
Peripheral Nervous System
Cranial Nerves
Spinal Nerves
Plexus
Peripheral Nerves
Thoracic Outlet Syndrome: Cause
Compression of nerves, blood, or both because of inadequate passage way through space between neck and armpit
TOS: Symptoms
Neck, shoulder, arm pain
Numbness and tingling of the fingers
Impaired circulation (causing discoloration)
Stress: definition
A series of biochemical and psychological changes that prepare the body for flight or fight
Plays role in disease
Alarm Phase
CNS aroused by external stimuli
Body’s defenses are mobilized by activation of the hypothalamus , SNS, and adrenal glands
Resistance Phase
- Mobilization of stored energy
- Hormone levels elevated
- Fight or Flight mechanism
Exhaustion Phase
- continuous stress leads to break down of adaptive mechanism and homeostasis
- no longer able to respond to stressors
