Intro Dz Of Intestinal Tract Flashcards
What is the difference between vomiting and regurgitation? (Abdominal contractions, process, sphincters, bile, content, prodromal nausea, time after eating)
Vomiting: abdominal contractions, reverse peristalsis from stomach/duodenum, sphincters actively open/relax, can have bile, content is liquid, digested/U digested food, there is prodromal nausea and/or retching
Regurg: no abdominal contractions, backflow from esophagus or pharynx, no change in sphincters, no bile, contents are undigested food and or liquid/mucus, no prodromal nausea/retching
Time is variable for both
Differences between small bowel and large bowl diarrhea
- frequency
- fecal volume
- urgency
- tenesmus
- mucous in feces
- hematochezia
- melena
- steatorrhea
Small bowel
(Normal to mild increase in frequency, increased volume, no urgency, no tenesmus, unlikely to have mucous in feces, no hematochezia, melena possible, steatorrhea with malabsorption)
Large bowel
(Marked increase in frequency, normal to mild increase in volume, urgency, tenesmus, mucous and hematochezia often, no melena or steatorrhea)
