Intro Deck Flashcards
1
Q
What is a virus?
A
An obligate intracellular parasite that can only replicate in living cells
2
Q
What is a virion?
A
The extracellular form of a virus
3
Q
What are the 2 or 3 things a virus is composed of
A
- genome
- capsid (protein coat around the capsid… when found with the genome it is called the nucleocapsid)
- sometimes an envelope
4
Q
What are the 3 variations of genome
A
- RNA or DNA
- single strand or double strand
- strand or - strand
What is a positive and negative strand? positive strand is same sense as viral mRNA and negative is complementary to the viral mRNA
5
Q
What are the 5 criteria for classifying a virus
A
- type of genome
- symmetry of capsule: helical, icosahedral, complex
- envelope (yes or no)
- mode of replication
- tropism or pathology
6
Q
What are the 8 steps of virus replication
A
- binding to surface receptor
- penetration through the plasma membrane
- uncoating
- synthesis of viral mRNA (transcription)
- synthesis of viral proteins
- amplification of viral genome (replication)
- assembly of progeny virions
- egress from infected cell
7
Q
What are the 3 pathways that a virus enters a cell
A
- fusion of the envelope with the surface plasma membrane
- receptor-mediated endocytosis followed by fusion with the endosome membrane
- lysis of the endosome
A host cell can be permissive or non-permissive which will lead to a productive or non-productive infection
