people enter a new society and take on features of the society they are in while still maintaining aspects of their culture; it is akin to the salad bowl analogy

What is ethnocentricity?
one uses their own cultural values and standards to judge another culture
What is cultural competence?
a clinician’s ability to respond respectfully and responsively to children and families and highlight the richness and limitations of the clinician and family’s socio-cultural context.
