Healthcare disparity Flashcards
According to Braveman et al. (2011), what is a healthcare disparity?
health differences among socially disadvantaged groups that are avoidable and systemic; these disadvantaged groups include the elderly, immigrants, and people with low SES or lack insurance
According to CDC, what is a healthcare disparity?
differences in health outcomes and causes among groups of people
What was the purpose of the ACA?
Regulate healthcare insurance; increase access to healthcare; improve quality of healthcare and health insurance; reduce healthcare spending
What were some criticisms of the ACA?
higher income families were taxed; higher healthcare premiums; you must pay out of pocket if you did not have insurance
What are facts regarding healthcare and diabetes?
diabetes can cause hearing loss and communication impairments (e.g., word retrieval and cognitive-linguistic decline) due to medication side-effects
How does cardiovascular health affect communication?
cardiovascular issues can cause acquired neurogenic disorders (e.g., dysarthria, apraxia, aphasia, and apraxia); cardiovascular disease can affect communication prior to stroke or onset of neurological illness
Causes of healthcare disparity include
lack of access, non-adherence barriers (patients do not follow recommendations of providers), and underrepresentation
What causes non-adherence barriers?
language limitations; limited education; lack of health literacy
What are implications for providing healthcare given the existence of healthcare disparities?
using translators and interpreters can be important since healthcare outcomes improve if the provider and patient speak the same language; build rapport with the client and be sure to use culturally sensitive materials; understand the sociocultural factors impacting one’s behaviors and beliefs about healthcare; continue to increase your cultural competence; glean information on the patient’s race, ethnicity, and native language(s), increase diversity of staff and providers; add cultural information when creating policies and practices
What does the ASHA Code Of Ethics mandate?
No discrimination based on age, gender, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, or disability; develop skills and acquire knowledge to serve culturally and linguistically diverse populations, and the possibility of mandating 0.2 CEUs in the area of cultural competence and CLD-based service diversity
