Intro and Chapter 1 Flashcards
Chronic Overnutrition
Consuming more calories and macronutrients than the body needs for an extended period
What is a, “free radical?”
Free Radicals are molecules with a negatively charged, highly reactive electron that seeks to neutralize itself by binding to other structures in the mitochondria and cell, and in doing so, causes significant damage.
What are the ten environmental factors that affect our mitochondria?
- Chronic overnutrition
- Nutrient deficiencies
- Microbiome issues
- Sedentary lifestyles
- Chronic stress
- Medications and drugs
- Sleep deprivation
- Environmental toxins and polutants
- Artificial light and circadian disruption
- Thermoneutrality
What are the three dysfunctions inside our body that generate, “Bad Energy”?
- Mitochondrial dysfunciltion
- Chronic inflammation
- Oxidative stress
How is metabolic syndrome defined?
As having three or more of the following traits:
1. Fasting glucose of 100mg/dL or higher
2. A waistline of >35 for women, >40 for men
