Public international law
Governs activities of govts in relation to other govts and a govt’s ability to regulate people and firms abroad
Private international law
Deals with the activities of individuals, corporations, and other private entities when they cross international borders
Also encompasses treaties
Are the subsets of intl laws distinct
Yes and no— they’re becoming less so over time. Especially as the definition of public international law is in flux and ever expanding

States, international organizations, substate entities, peoples, and individuals
What do sources of international law do
Tell us what qualifies as law and where to find it
Primary rules of law
Tell the law’s subjects what to do or not do, and the consequences of disobedience
Secondary Rules of law
Enable us to identify primary rules and the processes by which laws are made
