INTRO Flashcards
What are carbohydrates?
respiratory substrate from which cells release energy required to carry out functions
What other roles do carbohydrates have?
structural roles in cell walls, and form parts of glycoproteins and glycolipids
What do glycoprotein and glycolipids act as?
recognition sites in plasma membranes
What do lipids form?
a major component of plasma membranes
What do lipids also make up?
certain hormones and act as respiratory substrates
Where can protein be found?
also in the plasma membrane
Different roles of protein;
enzymes
chemical messengers within and between cells
important components of blood i.e. antibiotics
Example of nuclei acids;
DNA- carry genetic info that determines structure of protein ribonucleic acid (RNA)- role in synthesis of these proteins
What can glucose produced by plants be converted into?
insoluble starch for storage
What happens during aerobic respiration?
chemical reactions occur that use glucose and oxygen to release energy
How is some of the glucose in plants and algae used?
produce fat for storage
cellulose- strengthen cell wall
proteins
What is protein made of?
long chains of amino acids
What happens to these long chains of amino acids?
folded to produce a specific shape that enables other molecules to fit into the protein
What do proteins act as?
structural components of tissue i.e. muscles, hormones, antibiotics and catalysts
What do catalysts do?
increase rate of chemical reactions
