umbilicus (tympany) laterally until dullness is heard. Mark that area of transition. Have patient turn 30 degrees onto one side and percuss again for change from tympany to dullness. If fluid is present that line will move toward the umbilicus.

What Ascites sign is when patient is supine with their hand along vertical midline. Place examiners hands on each side of the abdomen and strike one side with fingertips. Feel for the impulse of fluid with the other hand.
