Intro Flashcards
Who are you?
Hi! I’m Matthew Rimmer and i am an artist who lives in Glasgow making mostly sculptures but also drawings, paintings and video. I am interested in what defines nature in the Anthropocene. I explore this through research into aquascaping, which is the artistic design of aquarium landscapes, and the aquarium industry. I want to question the potential that contemporary examples of simulated nature and captivity, such as aquariums, have to become definitive of nature when naturally occurring ecosystems become inhospitable, as is the fate of the White Cloud Mountain minnow; a fish thought to be extinct in the wild, yet flourishing in domestic aquaria.
My work is visually stimulating and invites playful imagination, hinting at figuration while encouraging abstract readings. The feeling of containment that runs through my work alludes to intersex secrecy and an interest in the inherent containment of worlds in painting and drawing.
Why are you here and what are you here to do?
I got involved with the GoMA Youth Group when i was invited to exhibit as part of the 2019/20 cohort’s exhibition ‘Growth’.
Im here to introduce myself to you and go through some of my recent projects and then we are gonna do a workshop about Anthropomorphism but I’ll get back to that later.
