what was First outing?
Following ‘Air Diving’, i was invited by queerly made to be part of their group show ‘First Outing’ in Blackpool. This is my window installation ‘Sinking into Sight’ which is a series of sculptures made with Polymorph (a mouldable thermoplastic used by dentists to make casts of your teeth) sealed in water filled vinyl bags, hung on chains with caribiner hooks. They directly reference the process of transporting and sometimes displaying fish and coral in aquarium markets. I’m interested in the tight spaces contained by the bags which are in themselves interim ecosystems and therefore temporary worlds in their own right.
The work embodies my personal experiences of intersex secrecy. It expresses the comfort felt in creating a disguise and living contained within it, while feeling ashamed for believing that there was something about me that needed to be fixed. The title Sinking Into Sight also references that. Rather than sinking into being seen by others, its about me sinking into seeing myself, how as much as that is a positive thing it is also hard to leave behind the safe cosy world of the secret i had been keeping, so i am in ways sinking into reality.
These works exist to personify my experience of cloaking and the opportunity as a whole has led me to a new found confidence and acceptance in being a queer artist.
