Intrinsic Back Muscles Flashcards
Superficial intrinsic back muscles (1)
splenius
Splenius - O
arises from nuchal ligament and spinous processes of C7-T6
Splenius - N
posterior rami of spinal nerves
Splenius - A
acting alone: lateral flexion of neck
rotation of head to ipsilateral side of muscle
acting together: extension of head and neck
Intermediate intrinsic back muscles (3)
iliocostalis
longissimus
spinalis
Erector spinae
iliocostalis
longissimus
spinalis
Erector spinae- O
thoracolumbar fascia
Erector spinae - N
posterior rami of spinal nerves
Erector spinae - A
acting bilaterally: head and vertebral extension as back is flexed (controls movement by gradually lengthening fibers)
acting unilaterally: lateral flexion of vertebral column
Deep intrinsic back muscles (3)
semispinalis (thoracis, cervicis, and capitis)
multifidus
rotatores (brevis and longus)
Semispinalis - N
posterior rami of spinal nerves
Semispinalis - A
extension and contralateral rotation of head, T-spine, and C-spine
Multifidus - N
posterior rami of spinal nerves
Multifidus - A
unilateral contraction rotates to contralateral side
vertebral stabilization during local movements of vertebral column
Rotatores - N
posterior rami of spinal nerves
