2
Q
Sodium thiopental
A
- Pale yellow powder
- Dose: 3-7mg/kg
- Hypnosis in 30-40S
- Induces general anesthesia for 5-10mins
- Enhances the GABA A receptor
- Decreases blood pressure and causes compensatory tachycardia
- Dose dependent respiratory depression
- May cause laryngospasm and bronchospasm
- Can cause porphyria
- Caution for intraarterial injection- can cause thrombosis and gangrene
** Decreases intracranial pressure therefore indicated in patients where an increase in intracranial pressure is unwanted
3
Q
Propofol
A
- Induction dose is 1-2mg/kg
- Enhances activity of GABA A receptors
- Rapid onset and duration of action
- Liver metabolism and extra hepatic metabolism
- Decreases blood pressure causing hypotension
- Causes bradycardia
- Respiratory depression
- Antiemesis
- Excitatory effects on CNS
- Fat overload syndrome
- May turn hair and urine green
*** Propofol infusion syndrome:
- Severe metabolic acidosis, rhabdomyolysis, renal failure, cardiac failure
- To check for propofol infusion syndrome, measure triglyceride levels
4
Q
Ketamine:
A
- Dose: 1-2mg•kg-1
- Tachycardia
*** Causes bronchodilation, indicated with asthma patients - Salivation
- Dissociative anesthesia, analgesia, hallucinations
- SNS stimulation, increases levels of adrenaline and noradrenaline
- NMDA receptor antagonist
5
Q
Etomidate
A
- Dose: 0.3mg•kg-1
- Suppresses adrenocortical function by inhibition of 11-hydroxylase and 17-hydroxylase -> inhibits cortisol and aldosterone synthesis
- Pain on injection
- Porphyria
*** Indicated with CVS diseases
6
Q
Benzodiazepines:
A
- Midazolam - 1-5mg
- Diazepam - 5-20mg
7
Q
Etomidate:
A
- Dose: 0.3mg/kg
***Drug of choice for cardiac disease - Supresses adrenocortical function by inhibiting production of 11-hydroxylase and 1717-hydroxylase -> inhibits cortisol and aldosterone synthesis
- Pain on injection
- Excitatory movements
- Porphyria
