Intraspecific relationships Flashcards
2 types
Aggressive ( competition: to reduce this they have territories and hierarchies.
Co-operative behaviour ( courtship, group formation, & parental care (k and r strategies)
Group behaviour
BENEFITS OUTWEIGHS COSTS
advantage =
1) greater chance of finding food
2) Greater protection from predators
3) Co-operation in bringing up young
Stay together using smell,sight,touch etc
Aggression needs to be suppressed
to do this:
territories &hierachies, agrression towards only one sex e.g male
Aggressive response
INtra comp= between members of same group as they compete for the same resources.
this needs to be REDUCED as injury and fighting to death is non-adaptive. and results in loss of strong male who is needed for protection and breeding etc.
Agression may also…
cause stress wihtin group and so decrease fitness of the group
territory
actively defended area against intruders by an animal which considers it it’s own
Home range
area where animal searches for food (close to territory)
Adaptive featrues of territory
ensures space for each animal and successful mating.
most successful males hold best territories therefore ensures best genes are passed on to offsprings.
spreading out= harder fro predators to find them and avoid spread of disease.
Longterm teritory effect
ADVANATAGE:
reduces fighting and animals can spend more time and energy on food collecting. ensures safe protected nest or home for young.
DISADVANATGE
large amount of energy defenidn terrirtry
hierachies = series of ordered groupings
reduces conflicr and open agression
food goign to fittest males = stronger males to defend territory and esures protection.
Weker members disadvantaged but still get protection
