Step 1
Check and assemble equipment on a clean working area, connect the 3-way tap and short extension set.
Step 2
Flush through short extension and fill 10mll syringe.

Put on gloves
Step 4
Correct position of leg - knee flexes and leg externally rotated over rolled napkin. Identify the site on the leg
Step 5
Cleanse the skin over the site with swab
Step 6
Grip needle with thumb and index finger close to the point and hold perpendicular to the skin surface.
Step 7
Insert the needle with a cork-screw motion until you feel a give
Step 8
Remove the styles
Step 9
Attach a 5ml syringe and aspirate a few drops of fluid to check placement in the marrow cavity
Step 10
Deliver 10ml saline test bolus and check for fluid extravasated into subcutaneous tissue at insertion site and into the calf
Step 11
Secure the needle with a cord clamp longitudinally along the tibia and plaster tape above and below
Step 12
Give fluid bolus infusion using the 3-way tap and 10 ml syringe (pushed infusion) - initial resuscitation is 20ml/kg
