Intracellular processes Flashcards
Describe the role of the golgi in protein trafficking
Protein is sent from the ER to the golgi. The proteins are carried in vesicles that fue to become cis cisterna. Proteins move through the golgi stack, undergoing enzymatic modification that labels them for a specific cell and destination
Describe the post office anaology of protein trafficking
Letter - new protein
Address label - Signal peptide
Postman - SRP receptor
Letterbox - translocon
What is added during glycolysation
Sugar residues (carbohydrates)
Where does glycolysation occur
In the golgi and ER
WHat is added during phosphorylation
A phosphate group
What does phosphorlyation do
It alters protein activity
What is added during Acetlyation
An acetyl group
What does acetylation do?
Regulates gene expression
Name 2 types of protein degredation
Lysosomal and proteosmal
Name 3 characteristics of lysosomal degredation
Occurs on membrane and extracellular proteins. Also occurs on protein with a long half life
Name 3 characteristics of proteosmal degredation
Occurs on proteins with a short half life, uses key metabolic enzymes abd takes place at proteosomes
Doe proteosmal degredation require ATP
yes
How does proteosmal degredation work?
3 steps - protein is tagged with ubiquitin
Name 3 pathways that culminate in lysosomal degredation
Endocytosis, phagocytosis and autophagy
What is autophagy
The consumption of the bodies own tissue
