Why study Human Development?
The study of human development attempts to promote a better understanding of the different stages of life.
Investigating human development helps us understand how and why people think and act the way they do.

Define Physical Development:
Gross & fine motor skills
Growth and maturation of sense, muscles, organs, and body systems.
Define Intellectual Development:
Brain growth and stimulation of the central nervous system.
Maturation of mental processes such as learning, imagination, memory and perception.
Development of language for young children.
Define Emotional Development:
A positive feeling of one’s self, family, friends and the world around us.
Maturation and evolution of emotions, social skills, identity, personality, morals
Learn how to handle feelings appropriately.
Define Social Development:
Knowledge of how people interact, play, take turns, share, or socially.
Ability to build relationships, make friends.
Being aware and supportive of these w/ challenging social conditions.
Becoming independent.
Define Moral Development:
Development of a sense of right and wrong.
Including a conscience that governs thoughts, feelings and behaviours.
Concepts of justice, rights, responsibilities and fairness.
Creating a positive attitude towards others in society.
What is the common contributing factor for healthy and positive human development in all 5 areas?

What are developmental tasks?
- Adjustments that must occur throughout the life of an individual
- Can be physical, social, emotional, intellectual, psychological, and/or moral
- If successfully achieved, it is likely that a person will fund greater happiness and success in comforting later life adjustments or developmental tasks.
- Failure leads to unhappiness disapproval and the possibility of difficulty with later adjustment.
