What does Republic mean?
Without a king/queen.
In January 1919, who began a new government? What was it known as? Why?
Ebert.
The Weimar Government/republic
They couldn’t meet in Berlin due to the riots so met in Weimar.
What is a democracy?
People have a vote for who the politicians are
What is socialism?
Looking after the poorer people (the Weimar Republic was predominantly socialists)
What is nationalism?
You want your country to be stronger than anyone else’s.
What is a dictatorship?
A system of government where one man has all the power.
What did the Weimar Republic do?
Wrote a new constitution All men and women over 20 could vote. Proportional representation. Many freedom rights People could vote for members of the Reichstag Separate vote for the president There would be state governments
What was the role of the president?
Control of the armed forces.
Summons and dismisses Reichstag
Appoints and dismisses chancellor
Can rule by themselves in case of an emergency article 48
When was the Spartacus revolt?
January 1919
How was the threat if the communist uprising dealt with?
The friekorps (ex-soldiers) were used to put down the communist threat- this was very brutal- not good for government.
What was the kapp putsch?
It was the freikorps turn to try and get rid of the Weimar Republic in March 1920. They wanted a strong dictator. Kapp was the man in charge. Since they were ex soldiers the soldiers wouldn’t help.
How was the treat of the freikorps dealt with?
The workers went on strike so nothing would work. The freikorps were forced to retreat.
What happened in 1923?
Germany couldn’t pay reparations so the French came to take what was theirs by invading the Ruhr in the form of goods.
How did the Weimar Republic deal with the French invading the Ruhr?
They used passive resistance. Industrial production grinds to a halt.
