What happened to the French in 1917?

A

MUTINY! The Germans didn’t realise that the French were committing mutiny. If the Germans had realised what was going on, they could have won the war.

What were the 3 reasons why Germany was curtain they we’re going to win the war?

A

~ The Russian revolution meant that Germany could move half of their army back to the western front.
~ Britain only had 6 months worth of food left.
~ the army had made huge progress.

Why did the Russians pull out of the war in November 1917?

A

Zare, the king of Russia was overthrown during the Russian revolution. This meant Germany only needed to worry about the western front.

What was the u-boat campaign?

A

Unrestricted submarine warfare.
Sink supply ships (food) to starve Britain
After the accidentally sank the Lusitania they began to just sink anything that came into Britain because they thought they would be able to win the war before America joined the war.

A

~ Lusitania sunk 1915
~ Unrestricted u boat warfare February 1917 (destroyed many American ships)
~ March 1917 Zimmerman telegram encourages Mexico to declare war on America (if Mexico attacks America they will be too busy to join the war.)

What was operation Michael/Ludendorff offensive?

A

This was a plan that allowed the Germans to make outstanding progress. However this plan was very exhausting August 1918 looked like the Germans were going to win.

A

The British and the Americans launched an attack on exhausted German soldiers.
Germany had no back up and their recruits were young boys
Britain’s back up was America.
The Americans potential.

A

The Germans were pushed back and Kaiser asked for a ceasefire (armistice) the fighting ended not the war,

A

There were only two places that Germany could get their food from.
Austria-Hungary were separated by the Alps.
England had blocked the sea so the Germans couldn’t get supplies.

A

The enemy. They blamed the Kaiser for loosing the war and their suffering.

What was happening to the German civilians?

A

Lack of food due to British blockade
Strikes cripple industry- lack of food - prices go up- people go on strike- they can’t afford it.
Disease- Spanish flu- no supplies to help combat the disease.

The kaiser abdicated to avoid revolution.

What happened to the German soldiers?

A

Starvation, despair and chaos.
Virtual civil war.
They went back to Germany and wanted to carry on fighting- they had nothing left to lose..

A

The politicians who signed the armistice. The public felt betrayed by the politicians and Jews (most of the politicians just so happened to be Jewish.)
