What is definition of intestinal atresia?

A

It is simply intestinal obstruction

What is duodenal atresia?

A

Obstruction of duodenum most common cause being failure of recanulisation

Also can be linked to trisomy 21 ( down syndrome)

What is Non - duodenal Atresia?

A

Affect Jejunum, Ileum, Colon

It is not from recanulisation failure but happens due to ischemic injury ( lack of blood flow)

Double bubbles form due to inflated stomach because the amniotic fluid has nowhere to go.

This can be detected on prenatal ultrasound.

Treatment for intestinal atresia?

A

Gastric decompression:
- remove fluid from stomach

Intravenous fluids ( IV)

Surgery = duodenostopy.
