Interview
An interaction between and interviewer and an interviewee
Structured interviews
The interviewer reads out a list of prepared questions to the interviewee
Unstructured interviews
It is a lot like a conversation where the interviewer has few if any questions prepared in advance
Semi - structured interviews
A number of questions have been decided in advance but the interviewer will ask follow - up questions at certain points
Strength of interviews
They produce extensive information
Weakness of interviews
Data can be difficult to analyse
Questionnaire
A set of written questions used to find out a person’s attitudes on a particular topic
Open question
Responders provide their own answers rather that selecting from ones provided
- produce qualitative data
Close question
One that has a fixed range of possible answers
- produce quantitative data
Strength of questionnaires
They can gather information from lots of people relatively quickly
Weakness of questionnaires
Respondents may not always answer questionnaires truthfully
Observation studies
Give researchers a chance to record behaviour just by sitting back and taking notes
Types of observations
• naturalistic versus controlled
• covert versus overt
• participant versus non - participant
Categories of behaviour
When a target behaviour is broken down into units that can be observed and recorded
Interobserver reliability
The extent of which there is agreement between two or more observers involved in observations of a behaviour
Reliability
Concern the consistency of a measurement
Validity
Concerns wether a result is ‘true’
