Unstructured - Theoretical
POSITIVISTS
Not standardised measuring tool
Not objective and is unreliable as hard to replicate
Small sample
Hard to compare and prove hypothesis.
Invalid as high interaction increases chance of social desirability.
INTERPRETIVISTS
WEBER- Build up versheten so understand.
GLASSER AND STRAUS- Grounded Theory
BECKER- Don’t need to build rapport, judge on situation. Sometimes use anger or disbelief.
FEMINISM
OAKLEY - value committed. 178 interviews, 9hrs long. Genuine relationship and help women and in turn help her. Mutual gain.
PAWSON- Just positivist bashing.

Quick - Young and Wilmott over 900 interviews, low refusal rate only 54 turn down.

Questionnaires in context - practical.
Literacy poor so unstructured interviews good for inmates.
Recording - Pen too formal, but digital can be used in court. MAGUIRE- Never record when studying street crime.
SAFTEY
DAVIE- Risk taken hostage, say where and when. ‘The Miss’
HOYLE - Took off duty officers when speak to domestic violence victims, broke trust. ‘Nosy bloody cow’
Access
Prisoners easy. Victims hidden so hard.
Time and place difficult as need to be safe and confidential. Davie used local cafe.

Hard if reveal criminal info.
Maguire- Never record and never tell police.

ACCESS
- WALKGATE - Use Northern students in Salford, Gov previously told to leave.
Reliable
-MAGUIRE- Hard to replicate, some group, some seconds long.
Validity
-HOYLES - Closed Qs = Canteen culture of domestic violence. Open Qs= More sympathetic to canteen culture than previously admitted. Validated by observation.
DAVIE- Slang in prisons only way to give meaning,. Need unstructured so can clarify.
Researchers low experience of CJS and respondents defensive, unstructured helps overcome.
UNSTRUCTURED - Practical

Rapport helps tackle sensitive issues.
Clarify misunderstandings
Flexible - Good for grounded theory and if dealing with unfamiliar topic.
Interviewee gets to say what they see as important.

Long time and low sample
Lots of qualitative data.
