Focus first on the caregiver to give the child a chance to warm up to you

Use short simple questions and explanations

Stay professional don’t use teen jargon
Focus first on the person not the problem
Give positive reinforcement
How would you communicate with other adults
Use last name to show respect
Allow for longer interview time
Make adjustments for physical limitations such as hearing difficulty
Adjust your pace so that the patient doesn’t feel rushed
