Q

Playground Adaptations / Accessibility

A

OTs may need to provide adaptations and positioning supports to allow a child to play like peers
To support children in the occupation of play, OTs need to consider how playing in certain positions may reduce or increase barriers to access
OTs may need to position children so that they can move to engage in play (for example sidelying)

Q

Toy Modifications

A

Adapted toys allows our children to interact and play with typical toys that align with their physical and cognitive abilities. Adaptive play is not only about switch access, but like typical play it is the foundational learning. When I look at switch access, I think about variety of switch, access points and positions for future mobility, educational opportunities, environmental access and of course augmentative communication.

Switch Access
Children play in a variety of positions that align with the task, the environment and the child’s abilities.
Children with neuro-motor challenges often have difficulty supporting their upper extremities for environmental and object exploration and manipulation.
Adaptive equipment in varying positions allows the child to engage in successful play experiences, promoting curiosity, mastery, and play exploration.
Adapted Switch Toys provide the foundation for future communication, educational, and mobility opportunities through self-directed, independent play.

Q

Why is tongue lateralization important?

A

This is important because kids with low tone will move back and forth, therefore not moving to the sides of the mouth and it keeps the food a midline being unable to break down the food effectively
