Interstitial Lung Disease Flashcards

1
Q

what is interstitial lung disease

A

broad term used to describe diseases affecting the lung parenchyma causing inflammation + fibrosis

  • Fibrosis is the replacement of normal lung tissue with scar tissue
  • this is stiff and does not function properly – restrictive lung disease

Q

what is the reaction to in

  • Farmers lung
  • Bird fanciers lung
  • Malt workers lung
A

farmers lung = reaction to mouldy spores in hay (Actinomycetes bacteria)

bird fanciers lung = reaction to avian protein

malt workers lung = reaction to mould on barely (aspergillus clavatus)

16
Q

effects of asbestosis on the lung

A

pleural plaques - ‘holly leaf’ appearance
pleural thickening
lower zone fibrosis
risk of mesothelioma

17
Q

what is a mesothelioma

A

cancer of mesothelial layer of pleural cavity
strongly linked to asbestosis
- SOB, chest pain, clubbing, weight loss
right lung affected more than left lung

18
Q

what type of occupations put a person at risk of silicosis

A

sand blasting
quarrying
mining

19
Q

what does silicosis increase risk of

A

TB

20
Q

CXR signs silicosis

A

egg shell calcification of hilar lymph nodes

21
Q

spirometry results in interstitial lung disease

A

restrictive pattern

  • FVC significantly reduced
  • FEV1 reduced
  • FEV1/FVC ratio - normal / increased
