Interspecific relationships Flashcards
What is the name of the interspecific relationship where one species benefits while the other is harmed
Parasitism
What are the two interspecific relationships where neither species are harmed?
Commensalism & Mutualism
What are similarities and differences between interspecific and intraspecific competition?
Both involve the competition over resources. Although interspecific competition is competition between different species and intraspecific competition is between the same species.
What are the similarities and differences between predation and herbivory?
Both involve harm to another species although predation is the harm of animals and herbivory the harm of plants.
What does herbivory mean?
An animal feeding on a plant species.
How might a parasite benefit from a host?
They benefit by having a home, resources, food, water and heat from their host.
What are some examples of Parasitism?
Headlice, tapeworms.
What is the difference between mutualism and commensalism?
In mutualism both species benefit and in commensalism only one species benefits.
What is mutualism?
Where both species benefit through a mutual relationship
What is commensalism?
Where one species benefits while the other is unaffected
What are some ways a species may benefit from a mutualistic relationship?
They may help each other gain more resources
What is the purpose of mimicry?
Mimicry is used to avoid predators by mimicking appearance, behaviour, sound and even smells of other organisms.
What is the definition of batesian mimicry?
Batesian mimicry is where harmless species mimic a dangerous or poisonous species.
What is mullerian mimicry?
mullerian mimicry is when two unpalatable (Un-tasty) species mimic each others warning signs.
What is the difference between batesian and mullerian mimicry?
The difference is that batesian is one species mimicking another and mullerian mimicry is two species mimicking each other.
