Intersectionality Flashcards
Diversity
- state of being diverse;
- range of different things;
- entails INCLUDING/INVOLVING people
- RANGE of different social & ethnic backgrounds and of different genders, sexual orientations, etc.
inner circle of the Diversity Wheel
what makes a person who the person is on the inside (e.g., age, gender identity, national origin, sexual orientation, race, mental abilities)
external/outside circle
what makes a person on the outside (education, political belief, family, organizational role, language & communication skills, income, religion, work, appearance)
privilege
one group has something of value that is DENIED to others simply because of the groups TO WHICH THEY BELONG, rather than because of anything they’ve done/failed to do.
what people should have
- unearned entitlements: this should be a given; no need to “earn” it
- unearned advantage: bc there are still entitlements restricted to certain groups with certain characteristics only
- Conferred dominance:c certain groups are still given power over another
Intersectionality
- INTERCONNECTED DIMENSIONS of diversity
- such dimensions OVERLAP & these are INTERDEPENDENT SYSTEMS (as produced by intersectionality)
