Intersectionality Flashcards
what is social stratification?
a system by which a society ranks categories of people in a hierarchy
what is intersectionality according to Kimberle Crenshaw?
when groups of people experience serious disadvantages because they are only looked at from the perspective of one single categorical axis
what means to be multiply-burdened?
falling into more than one disadvantaged category
what is the integration paradox?
when individuals that are most “rooted” experience discrimination most
why does intersectionality happen?
relative deprivation- realise they are disadvantaged
making people more aware of political and social discussions about integration, migration, racism
second generation- feel the weight because they are born and bred in and may feel they are citizens of and part of the society
