our understanding of who we are
how can self-conception be?
consensual (conditions of membership that are matters of common knowledge)
or sub-consensual (any matter that requires interpretation by the respondent to place a person relative to others)
what is social identity?
aspects of an individual’s self-image that derive from the social categories they belong
define Social Identity Theory
one’s identity is related to the group in which they exist; intergroup interaction
define Social Categorisation Theory
human interaction within the group develops a social identity that is more salient than a personal one; intragroup
what is depersonalisation?
an individual that is absorbed within a group becomes less of a single individual, more of a prototype of the group
what is Social Identity Approach?
SCT leads to SIT, to “us” vs “them”, getting meaning from your group and shifting feelings and behaviours towards other groups
what is the shifting nature of identities?
traditional, modern, postmodern identities
what says Hegel about organisations?
they are not systems, but emergent social processes
