- issues can be examined in depth and detail
- interviews are not restricted to specific Qs & can be guided by researcher
- research framework can be quickly revised
- data is based on human experience
- more complexities are discover that are often missed by positivistic enquires
- data is transferable to other settings

- heavily dependent on the skills of researcher
- easily influenced by researchers bias
- rigor more difficult to maintain, asses and demonstrate
- time consuming
- not well understood and accepted as research
- researchers presence affect the subjects response
