what is the interpersonal attraction?
the study of the attraction between people which leads to the development of platonic or romantic relationships
what is relationships?
regular social encounters over periods of time
(Argyle & Henderson, 1985)
how is evolution theory connected with interpersonal attraction?
our attractiveness preferences are shaped by evolution, as
reproduction with attractive individuals increases
our reproductive fitness
what are the factors that influence attraction?
- physical appearance
- mental factors - proximity, familiarity
what is attractive things in physical apperance
- face (face shape, proportion, masculinity/femininity)
- body (waist to hip ratio in women as it shows fertility, shoulder to hip ratio in men as it shows upper body strength)
how does proximity influence interpersonal attraction?
we form relationships with people that we encounter more with (passive contacts)
what does zajonc 1968 say about familiarity (exposure)?
we like what we are exposed to more often - mere exposure effect
explain Moreland and Beach’s 1992 study on the mere exposure effect by zajonc
- four women attended small college class
- they went in zero, once, five, or fifteen
- they were rated at the end of semester on familiarity and attractiveness by students
- results: more exposed = more attractive
