Interocclusal Contacts
Two Philosophies
- Cusp-Fossa contacts
* Cusp-Marginal Ridge contacts
Each functional cusp occludes in a fossa
of the opposing tooth (2)
• Tooth to tooth arrangement
• Used when restoring both
opposing quadrants of teeth
cusp-marginal ridge (3)
•A one tooth to two teeth arrangement (most of the times)
•The majority of natural dentitions have this type of
occlusion
•Commonly used for single restorations
The cusp-marginal ridge occlusal relationship
allows for
some cusps to occlude onto
marginal ridges and some others to occlude
into fossae.
The cusp-fossa relationship allows only for
each cusp to occlude into one fossa.
Mandibular central incisor contacts the
maxillary central
incisor
(opposes only one tooth –the only other tooth to do this
is the max 3rd molar)
• Mandibular lateral incisor contacts the
opposing maxillary
central and lateral incisors
• Mandibular canine contacts
opposing maxillary lateral
incisor and maxillary canine
Mandibular first premolar contacts the (2)
▪mesial marginal ridge of the maxillary first
premolar and the distal marginal ridge of the
maxillary canine (cusp-marginal ridge)
or
▪mesial fossa of the maxillary first premolar
(cusp-fossa)
Mandibular second premolar contacts the (2)
▪mesial marginal ridge of the maxillary second
premolar and the distal marginal ridge of the
maxillary first premolar (cusp-marginal ridge)
or
▪mesial fossa of the maxillary second premolar
(cusp-fossa)
Mandibular first molar, the MB cusp contacts
the (2)
▪mesial marginal ridge of the maxillary first
molar and the distal marginal ridge of the
maxillary second premolar (cusp-marginal
ridge)
or
•mesial triangular fossa of the maxillary first
molar (cusp-fossa)
Mandibular first molar, the DB cuspcontacts the (2)
▪central fossa of the maxillary first molar
(cusp-marginal ridge)
or
▪central fossa of the maxillary first molar
(cusp-fossa)
Mandibular first molar, the D cusp (3)
•usually non functional/not in occlusion
or
•contacts the distal fossa of the maxillary
first molar (cusp-marginal ridge)
or
•contacts the distal fossa of the maxillary
first molar (cusp-fossa)
Mandibular second molar, the MB cusp contacts the (2)
•mesial marginal ridge of the maxillary second molar
and the distal marginal ridge of the maxillary first
molar (cusp-marginal ridge)
or
•mesial triangular fossa of the maxillary second molar
(cusp-fossa)
Mandibular second molar, the DB
cusp contacts the (2)
•central fossa of the maxillary second molar (cusp-marginal ridge) or •central fossa of the maxillary second molar (cusp-fossa)
Maxillary central incisor contacts the
mandibular central and lateral incisors
Maxillary lateral incisor contacts the
opposing mandibular lateral incisor and mandibular
canine
Maxillary canine contacts the
opposing
mandibular canine and overhangs-contacts the
mandibular premolar
Maxillary first premolar contacts the (3)
•distal fossa of the mandibular first premolar OR
•distal marginal ridge of the mandibular first premolar molar and mesial marginal ridge of the mandibular second premolar
(cusp-marginal ridge)
or
•distal fossa of the mandibular first premolar (cusp-fossa)
Maxillary second premolar contacts the (3)
•distal fossa of the mandibular second premolar OR
•distal marginal ridge of the mandibular second
premolar molar and the mesial marginal ridge of the
mandibular first molar
(cusp-marginal ridge)
or
•distal fossa of the mandibular second premolar (cusp-
fossa)
Maxillary first molar, the ML cusp contacts the (2)
•central fossa of the mandibular first molar (cusp-
marginal ridge)
or
•central fossa of the mandibular first molar (cusp-
fossa)
Maxillary first molar, the DL cusp contacts the (2)
•distal marginal ridge of the mandibular first molar and the mesial marginal ridge of the mandibular second molar (cusp-marginal ridge)
or
•distal fossa of the mandibular first molar (cusp-fossa)
Maxillary second molar, the ML cusp contacts
the (2)
•central fossa of the mandibular second molar
(cusp-marginal ridge)
or
•central fossa of the mandibular second molar
(cusp-fossa)
Maxillary second molar, the DL cusp contacts
the (2)
•distal marginal ridge of the mandibular
second (cusp-marginal ridge)
or
•distal fossa of the mandibular second molar
(cusp-fossa)
The pathways each functional cusp will follow during
excursive movements: (3)
- Right Lateral Movement
- Left Lateral Movement
- Protrusive Movement
The pathways each functional cusp will follow during excursive movements: •Right Lateral Movement •Left Lateral Movement •Protrusive Movement
Usually referred to as: (3)
- Working (also known as laterotrusive pathways)
- Non-Working (also known as mediotrusive pathways)
- Protrusive pathways
