Internet Connections Flashcards

1
Q

Wired connections? CC

A

COPPER CABLES = cheaper, poorly insulated = susceptible to electromagnetic interference.
Can suffer from ATTENUATION (network distortion).
They are MALLEABLE = less likely to break than fibre optic.
LOWER BANDWIDTH = cant transmit as much data at once.

Q

Wired connections? FOC

A

Vey FAST + EXPENSIVE.
Signal transmitted through WAVES OF LIGHT through a GLASS TUBE. So NOT AFFECTED by electromagnetic interference + suffer LESS from attenuation.
HIGHER BANDWIDTH = can TRANSFER MORE DATA at ONE TIME.
More FRAGILE.

Q

Wireless connections? B

A

BLUETOOTH = temporary SHORT-RANGE COMMUNICATION between devices within a limit of 10 METRES.
E.g. can be used to transfer audio files from one smartphone to another.
CLOSE PROXIMITY = DISADVANTAGE
No other hardware is required for a connection.

Q

Wireless connections? M

A

MICROWAVE = uses RADIO WAVES to SEND SIGNALS across a LARGE AREA via MICROWAVE TOWERS.
Can transmit large amount of data but ANTENNAS must be in the LINE OF SIGHT OF EACH OTHER with NO OBSTRUCTIONS.
Affected by BAD WEATHER = higher chances of attenuation.

Q

Wireless connections? S

A

SATELLITE networks use POINT TO MILTI-POINT COMMUNICATION by using satellites above the Earth’s atmosphere that receives transmission + rebroadcast them back to earth.
DISTANCE = there’s a large distance between communication device + satellite (45,000 miles) there’s a DELAY between data transmission and it being received.

Q

Wireless connections? GSM/5G

A

GLOBAL SYSTEM FOR MOBILE COMMUNICATIONS = allowing mobile phones to connect to networks for calls e.c.t
GENERATIONS = advances in mobile technology (e.g. 4G + 5G). Faster + more secure.

Connection Characteristics?

A

STRENGTH
RANGE
LATENCY = the DELAY when SENDING DATA across a network.
BANDWIDTH = the MAXIMUM AMOUNT OF DATA that can be SENT ACROSS A NETWORK AT ONCE.
STORAGE CAPACITY
CONTENTION = whether a network is DEDICATED (uncontended) or SHARED BETWEEN USERS (contended)
