Access + Storage Devices Flashcards
Handheld devices?
Small, lightweight + possibly worn on human body.
VERY PORTABLE = easy to transport.
Their small size restricts the space for a powerful processor + high memory capacity.
Handheld devices A + D?
A: LIGHT + PORTABLE = easily carried on person/in pocket.
Runs on BATTERY POWER so do not need to be plugged in power source = gives freedom of movement.
D: Low processing power due to small size + no cooling system.
Relies on BATTERY POWER = may no last long.
Can be LOST, DAMAGED + STOLEN.
Small memory/storage capacity + low versatility.
Portable devices?
LARGER + MORE POWERFUL than handheld.
E.g LAPTOP + LARGER TABLETS.
Portable devices A + D?
A: LIGHT + PORTABLE = easily transported in laptop bag/small rucksack.
Runs on BATTERY POWER = can work without a power outlet.
More POWERFUL+ VERSATILE than handheld.
D: Low Processing power + smaller memory/storage capacity than fixed devices.
Reliant on BATTERY POWER = can be only a few hrs.
Fixed devices?
BULKY devices.
Require CONSTANT POWER CONNECTION.
E.g. Desktop computer + Smart TV.
Fixed devices A + D?
A: Desktop computers have the HIGHEST PROCESSING POWER.
Contain SUFFICIENT COOLING SYSTEMS to maintain temperature.
Have LARGE STORAGE CAPACITIES + can be upgraded/expanded to even larger sizes.
VERY VERSATILE.
D: Reliant on POWER OUTLET + cannot be transported whilst on.
HEAVY + DIFFICULT TO MOVE = may require additional components like monitor.
Typically MORE EXPENSIVE than handheld + portable devices.
Shared devices?
Allows MULTIPLE USERS to ACCESS DATA at the SAME TIME.
E.g. Cloud storage = used by businesses + schools.
Data centre = dedicated building that contains computer systems.
Database servers.
Shared devices A + D?
A: ACCESSIBLE by MULTIPLE USERS at the SAME TIME.
Data Centres allow online services to run all day and year.
Cloud storage frees up physical space for users
Cloud Storage devices allow AUTHORISED USERS to ACCESS INFORMATION or WORK REMOTELY.
D: Reliant on STABLE NETWORK CONNECTIONS. if connection is lost = device will be affected.
Setting up shared devices in an organisation requires TECHNICAL KNOWLDEGE.
