Internet Flashcards
ARPANET
Advanced Research Projects Agency Network
First Computer Network
Launched in 1969
4 supercomputer connected for military research, to share information.
Started by University of California, Los Angeles
University of California, Santa Barbara
Stanford
University of Utah
NSFnet
National Science Foundation Network
CERN
European Center of Nuclear Research
Developed a system to share documents in a multi-platform environment.
Three major developments came from this:
• HTTP (Hyper Text Transfer Protocol)
• HTML (Hyper Text Markup Language)
• Web Browsers
HTTP
(HyperText Transfer Protocol)
allows transfer of Web pages using a browser.
FTP
(File Transfer Protocol)
Allows the transfer of file through the Internet from one computer to another.
TCP/IP
(Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol) Rules that computers use to communicate over the Internet.
Packets
Pieces of data divided up for transit.
Packets contain information about the computer that sent the data and where the data is going.
If a packet runs into a problem in transit, it can attempt to find another route. When all the packets arrive at their destination, the computer reassembles them.
IP Address
Internet Protocol (IP) address A unique number assigned to every computer connected to the internet. (Current version – IPv4) Each number in sequence ranges from 0 – 255 Example: 24.125.219.141
Network
two or more computers that are connected for the purpose of sharing resources.
LAN
Local Area Network A network of computers covering a small area.
WAN
Wide Area Network A network of computers covering a large geographical area.
HTML
HyperText Markup Language
The coding scheme used to format text for use in developing web pages.
ISP
Internet Service Provider
A service company that provides a user with an account on a host computer to have access to the Internet
