Internal Structure Of Brain And Its Functions Flashcards
What is the brain protected by?
The brain is protected by the cranium, which shields it from mechanical/physical damage. It is also protected by 3 membranes called meninges, meninges protects the brain from bacteria and toxins. There is fluid inside the meninges that support the brain and acts as a shock absorber.
What is the brain made of and what is the average amount of “it” does it have?
The brain is made out of neurones and has an average amount of 100 billion neurones.
Cerebral cortex’s functions and how many is it separated into?
The cerebral cortex functions involve mental activities; thinking, learning, reasoning, memory, behaviour and sense of responsibilities. It is separated into 5 parts.
How big is the cerebrum, why is it folded and what is it the central of?
The cerebrum makes up 80% of the brain and is separated into two cerebral hemispheres. It’s folded to increase surface area. Cerebrum is the central intelligence.
Corpus Collossum’s functions
Corpus collosum has a C structure and its function is to send messages to the right hemisphere from the left hemisphere. It connects both of the hemispheres.
Hypothalamus functions
The functions of the hypothalamus is to secrete hormones. There is also homeostasis; the control of body temperature and osmoregulation (blood and water control in blood).
Midbrain functions
The midbrain is involved in controlling the visual and auditory systems and body coordination.
Pituitary Gland functions
Pituitary gland produces hormones that control growth, sexual development and metabolism.
Pons functions
Pons is made up of tracks that pass messages. It also connects the medulla to the thalamus.
Medulla Oblongata functions
Medulla oblongata’s functions involve breathing, heart rate, blood pressure and reflex actions (such as sneezing and vomiting).
