Diseases That Effect The Brain Flashcards
Stroke - How is it caused and what’re its effects?
Strokes are caused by the formation of blood clots that block the oxygen supply, thus damaging neurones. As the neurones die, their specific functions such as speech or movement, are lost.
Tumour - What causes it and what is the effects?
Brain tumours form when abnormal brain cells begin to multiply out of control. As the tumour grows, it invades the brain tissue and causes headaches and nausea.
Parkinson’s Disease - How is it caused and what are it’s effects?
Parkinson’s Disease develops when neurones fail to produce the neurotransmitter dopamine. Without dopamine, the brain has trouble coordinating movement which causes tremors, stiffness and movement difficulties.
Epilepsy - What is it and how can it be triggered?
Epileptic seizures are sudden surges of electrical activity that cause uncontrolled movement or loss of consciousness. The seizures can be triggered by other human diseases, or a natural neurotransmitter problem.
