internal energy and changes of state Flashcards
What do the particles in a system do and where do they have energy ?
vibrate or move around. They have energy in their kinetic energy stores and potential energy stores due to their positions
The energy stored in a system..
The internal energy of a system
The energy stored in a system is stored by it’s particles
The internal energy of a system = total energy particles have in their kinetic and potential energy store
What occurs as you heat a system and what does it lead to ??
transfer energy to its particles = increase internal energy
Leads to change in temperature or change in state. If temp changes, the size of change depends on mass of substance, what’s its made of and the energy input
When does change in state occur ?
when you heat substance enough - particles have enough energy in their kinetic energy stores to break bonds holding them together.
heating a liquid
heating solid
it boils, evaporates and turns into gas
it melts and becomes liquid
both are change of states
cooling
particles lose energy and form bonds
change of states
freezing
melting
boiling or
evaporating
condensing gas to liquid
solid to gas = sublimation
what is the change of state ??
physical change - you don’t end up w new substance but same substance in new form.
number of particles don’t change but are arranged differently and mass is conserved.
When a reverse occurs in state of matter, substance returns to original form and properties
