Q

INTERNAL COLONIALISM: INSTITUTIONALIZATION OF COLONIALISM

A

*“In order for that legitimacy to be complete, it is not enough for the colonized to be a slave, he must accept this role. The bond between colonizers is thus destructive and creative” (Memmi).  “In order to assimilate and experience the oppressor’s culture, the native has had to leave certain of his intellectual possessions in pawn. These pledges include his adoption of the forms of thought of the colonialist bourgeoisie” (Fanon).
 “Around 1890, a little over 6000 British officials governed almost 300 million Indians with help of a little over 70,000 European soldiers … “ (Hobsbawn 1989, p. 81)

INTERNAL COLONIALISM: ROBERT BLAUNER “RACIAL OPPRESSION IN AMERICA” 1972

A

*“Because classic colonialism & America’s internal colonialism developed out of similar technological, cultural, and power, a common process of social oppression characterized the racial patterns in the two contexts - despite the variations in political & social structure” . Q

INTERNAL COLONIALISM: CONQUERED PEOPLE ARE NOT FREE LABOR

A

European immigrants even if they faced prejudice & discrimination could better themselves. “It is obvious that parallel alternatives were not to the early generations of Afro-Americans, and Mexican-Americans, because they were not part of a free labor force” (Blauner p.56) they had no choice in going to another job…they either worked there or starved

Q

INTERNAL COLONIALISM: MIRANDE

A

“Internal colonialism differs from the classic variety in that it entails not the subordination of a distant land but the acquisition of antiguous territory. Once territory is acquired, local elites are disposed from power and indigenous institutions are completely destroyed.”
