Internal anatomy Flashcards
What does the swim bladder do?
Provides buoyancy, allowing the fish to stay a certain depth in the water
What fish don’t have a swim bladder?
bottom-dwelling bony fish (the deeper they live the less likely they are to have a swim bladder.
What do the gills act as for the fish?
They act as lungs. They diffuse oxygen from the water into the bloodstream
How many chambers are in a fishes heart
2
- atrium and the ventricle
What are the functions of the liver
- produce bile from the breakdown of old red blood cells
- Secreate enzymes that break down fats
- production of blood cells and antibodies
- storage for fats and carbs
How many kidneys do fish have?
2
what are the 2 parts to the kidneys?
1) The anterior or head kidney - which forms blood
2) The posterior kidney involved in osmoregulation
- The kidney produces urine nd helps to regulate the salts in the body
What are the organs involved in digestion?
- mouth
- tongue and teeth
- pharynx (passes through)
- oseophagus (expands for food to travel down)
- Then the stomach where it’s partly digested
- Some fish have a gizzard which grinds food into small pieces before it passes into the intestines
- Intestines = is where it’s completed. The food enters the bloodstream
- Waste exits via the vent
What is the pyloric caeca
- has a fringelike projections
- located near the junction of the stomach and intestines
- secretes enzymes that aid digestion and absorb digested food
What does the gallbladder do?
- produce bile which is secreated into the intestine and used to neutralise acid from the stomach
- gallbladder - bright yellow or green
what does the Spinal cord do?
- connects the skull and the tail
- Connects brain to rest of the body
What is the brain?
- the control centre of the fish
WHat is the vent?
- is a urinary, digestive and reproductive opening
