Intermolecular Forces Flashcards
Intermolecular forces
Force of attraction between molecules
Dipole-dipole forces
Forces between two polar molecules
Dipole-induced dipole forces
Forces between polar and non-polar molecules
Hydrogen bonding (special dipole-dipole)
Forces between molecules in which hydrogen is covalently bonded to nitrogen, oxygen, or fluorine
Ion-dipole forces
Forces between ions and polar molecules
London forces (mutually induced dipole forces/dispersion)
Forces between non-polar molecules(weakest)
Boiling point
The temperature at which vapour pressure of a substance equals atmospheric pressure (the stronger the intermolecular forces the higher the boiling point)
Melting point
The temperature at which the solid and liquid phases of a substance are at equlibrium (the stronger the intermolecular forces the higher the boiling point)
Vapour pressure
The pressure exerted by a vapour at equlibrium with its liquid in a closed system (the stronger the intermolecular forces the lower the vapour pressure)
Solubility
The property of a solid, liquid or gaseous chemical substance(solute) to dissolve in a solid, liquid or gaseous solvent to form a homogeneous solution
Solubility
The property of a solid, liquid or gaseous chemical substance(solute) to dissolve in a solid, liquid or gaseous solvent to form a homogeneous solution
