Q

state the kinetic molecular theory

A

all matter is made up of small particles which are continually moving .Some molecules move faster than others ,but the average kinetic depends on the temperature

Q

state how particles behave in solids

A

in a fixed position with very little space between them so solids are dense. Forces hold the particles in place but they can vibrate. The vibration increases on heating and the solid expands .At the melting point the particles vibrate so much that they break away from

Q

state how particles behave in liquids

A

there are larger spaces between particles so the density of a liquid is less than that of the solid .Particles can move throughout the liquid but forces prevent them from leaving the liquid. On heating the particles move faster and further apart so the liquid expands. When the liquid boils the particles have enough energy to overcome the forces holding them and form a gas.

Q

state how particles behave in gases

A

the forces are not strong enough to hold the particles together so they spread out and fill the container. They collide with each other and the side of the container .On heating the particles move faster and hit the sides of the container more often. This means the pressure in the container increases.

Q

what is interatomic

A

they join elements together to make compounds.

Ionic bonds hold positive and negative ions into a sloid crystal lattice.

Q

elaborate on interatomic bonds.

A

covalent bonds join atoms together to make molecules .Molecular compounds can exist as solids, liquids and gases. Since the gases can be cooled and compressed to form liquids and solids there must be forces between molecules.
